Carmen de los Martires in Granada - History, Hours and Directions
The Carmen of the Martyrs is located in the surroundings of the Alhambra, south of the
walled enclosure with just over seven hectares known by Christians as Corral de
Captives and subsequently Campo de los Martires. Corral was called Captives in memory of Christian
captives who remained in the Arab prisons.
In Carmen of the Martyrs, the Catholic Queen ordered to build the first church in Granada on
the top of the hill in commemoration of Christian martyrs who suffered under the Arab domination in these places.
This would become later a bigger church and convent with several chapels
and a cloister and equipped with several outbuildings. The convent was destroyed later in
1842 to build a holiday home.
In the XIX Century the convent was sold and after passing through several owners,
built the palace with the gardens, widening the existed pool giving aspect of the lake.
Carmen de los Martires are romantic gardens, a successful blend of French and English gardens.
Declared Artistic Garden, its last owner Cristina de la Cruz, donate Carmen de los Martires to the City of Granada,
after a miserable season in which Carmen de los Martires nearly disappear. The palace and Gardens were partly restored
and now it is a place for walking,
weddings in Granada
and official receptions.
Today you can visit its beautiful gardens and appreciate magnificent panoramas of the city, the Vega and Sierra Nevada.
